Project Overview: Creating a Durable and Functional Multi-Use Space
Balzac’s Café in Niagara-on-the-Lake needed a long-term surface solution that could support both customer traffic and commercial delivery vehicles while keeping an attractive look for visitors.
The project included:
- Customer parking areas
- Delivery and loading zones
- Outdoor café patio space
To meet these requirements, the site used ECORASTER E50 with gravel infill and ECORASTER Bloxx with concrete pavers to create a permeable, durable and visually appealing surface system.
The Challenge: Supporting Heavy Traffic While Maintaining Aesthetic Appeal
The site needed a surface solution that could:
- Handle regular vehicle traffic
- Support incoming delivery trucks
- Provide stable footing for customers
- Reduce long-term maintenance
- Maintain a clean and professional appearance
- Integrate seamlessly with the outdoor café environment
Traditional paving options lacked the permeability and flexibility the project called for, while gravel alone would not provide the stability required for consistent vehicle loading and customer use.
Preparation
The Solution: Why ECORASTER E50 and Bloxx Were Selected
ECORASTER E50 and Bloxx were selected for their ability to combine durability, permeability and visual appeal across multiple applications within the property.
Key Benefits of the System
- Heavy-load support for delivery vehicles
- Stabilized gravel surface
- Permeable design for drainage performance
- Reduced rutting and surface movement
- Long-term durability
- Low maintenance requirements
- Clean and professional appearance
- Suitable for both commercial and customer-facing spaces
The interconnected grid system reinforces the gravel infill while creating a stable, functional surface for both operational and customer areas.
Installation
Step 1: Surface Preparation
The existing areas were prepared and graded to establish a stable foundation for the ECORASTER system.
Step 2: Base Installation
A compacted aggregate base was installed to provide structural support and optimize drainage performance throughout the site.
Step 3: ECORASTER E50 Installation
ECORASTER E50 panels were installed across the parking area and loading zone, allowing fast coverage and consistent alignment with the Bloxx grids installed in the outdoor patio space.
Step 4: Gravel Infill and Paver Placement
The E50 system was infilled with gravel to create a stabilized, permeable surface capable of supporting both pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Concrete pavers were set into the Bloxx grid to add visual appeal while keeping the surface permeable.
After
Parking Area
The reinforced gravel parking area provides a stable, durable surface for daily customer traffic while maintaining permeability and reducing gravel displacement.
Loading and Delivery Zone
The ECORASTER E50 system supports incoming supply trucks and loading activity while helping prevent rutting and surface deterioration under repeated heavy loads.
Outdoor Patio Space
The Bloxx patio with concrete pavers creates a visually appealing, functional outdoor seating area for café guests.
Results and Performance: A Durable Multi-Use Surface Solution
Since installation, the project has benefited from:
- Improved surface stability
- Reinforced gravel performance
- Support for delivery truck traffic
- Enhanced customer experience
- Reduced gravel migration
- Long-term durability
- Improved drainage performance
- A cohesive appearance across the property
The combination of commercial functionality and customer-facing aesthetics made ECORASTER E50 and Bloxx an ideal solution for the site’s diverse usage requirements.
