Project Overview: Creating a Sustainable and Functional Campus Environment
The school needed a durable, environmentally conscious surface for both its parking areas and the pedestrian walkways surrounding the building. As a school focused on sustainability, renewable energy awareness and environmental responsibility, it wanted a permeable surface system that matched the campus’s long-term environmental values while also delivering durability and visual appeal.
The project used ECORASTER E50 with gravel infill throughout the parking areas, along with ECORASTER Bloxx grids fitted with concrete inserts to create stable, attractive walkways around the building.
The Challenge: Supporting Daily Traffic While Maintaining Sustainable Design
The school required a surface solution that could:
- Support regular vehicle traffic within the parking area
- Create safe and stable pedestrian walkways
- Maintain a clean and natural campus appearance
- Improve drainage performance throughout the property
- Reduce long-term maintenance requirements
- Complement the school’s environmentally focused values
- Integrate seamlessly into the surrounding landscape
Traditional hardscape solutions lacked the permeability and sustainability the project called for, while loose gravel alone would not provide the long-term stability needed for daily school traffic and pedestrian use.
Preparation
The Solution: Why ECORASTER E50 and Bloxx Were Selected
ECORASTER E50 and Bloxx were selected for their ability to combine durability, permeability and environmental performance across multiple applications on the school property. The interconnected grid systems reinforce both the gravel parking surfaces and the pedestrian pathways while preserving the natural look of the campus.
Key Benefits of the System
- Stabilized gravel parking surface
- Permeable design for improved drainage
- Reduced gravel migration and rutting
- Durable pedestrian walkways
- Clean and professional appearance
- Low maintenance requirements
- Sustainable surface solution
- Long-term durability for school traffic
Installation
Step 1: Surface Preparation
The parking lot and walkway areas were prepared and graded to establish a stable foundation for the ECORASTER system.
Step 2: Base Installation
A compacted aggregate base was installed to provide structural support and optimize drainage performance across the site.
Step 3: ECORASTER E50 Installation
ECORASTER E50 panels were installed throughout the parking areas to create a reinforced gravel surface capable of supporting daily vehicle traffic.
Step 4: Bloxx Walkway Installation
Bloxx grids were installed along the walkways around the building and fitted with concrete inserts to create stable pedestrian pathways with an elevated finished appearance.
Step 5: Infill Placement
The parking areas were infilled with gravel, while the walkway grids received concrete inserts to complete the finished surface system.
After
Parking Lot
The reinforced gravel parking area provides a stable, permeable surface for daily staff, student and visitor traffic while reducing gravel displacement and ongoing maintenance.
Walkways Around the Building
The Bloxx walkway system with concrete inserts creates durable pedestrian pathways that complement the natural aesthetic of the campus while improving accessibility and long-term surface stability.
Results and Performance: A Sustainable Surface Solution for Educational Environments
Since installation, the project has benefited from:
- Improved surface stability
- Reinforced gravel performance
- Enhanced pedestrian accessibility
- Reduced gravel migration
- Improved drainage performance
- Sustainable site integration
- Long-term durability
- Reduced maintenance requirements
- Cohesive appearance across the property
The combination of ECORASTER E50 and Bloxx gave the school a durable, environmentally conscious surface system that aligns with the campus’s focus on sustainability and responsible site development.
