Before
This sour gas line was originally installed in the 1960s on existing farmland. Today, the area is known as the Blackfalds, Alberta Blindman Industrial Park. Since gas lines can, indeed, freeze, they need to safely be buried below the frost line. Recent development had jeopardized the sour gas line, exposing it to the potential frozen fuel line symptoms. For this paving project, our commercial permeable paving partner, along with the Alberta Energy Regulator, chose the Ecoraster permeable paver grid system to protect the surface and the gas line from possible damage.
Preparation
The sour gas line was originally installed in a clay base. Topsoil was stripped away from the original farmland to make room for the Industrial Park. Commercial paving contractors installed and compacted road crush over the clay base to help with ground reinforcement.
Installation
One of our most popular permeable paving options, the Ecoraster E50 plastic grid, was chosen for this project. Its ability to support over 70,000 lbs per sqft and remain permeable, even during the harshest weather, making it the obvious choice. Ecoraster was installed directly on the compacted road crush base. Crews were easily able to carry out paving installation at a rate of thousands of square feet per day. Half-inch washed pea gravel, topped an additional two inches of fill, was used to complete the gravel grid.
After
The sour gas line has now been properly protected from frost exposure, frozen fuel line symptoms, and the weight of heavy truck traffic that poses a risk to gas lines in this type of environment.
